Back to feedAi2 updates HiRO-ACE to generate global 3 km extreme-weather simulations at about 1/300th the cost of X-SHiELD
EDITOR BRIEF
Ai2 introduced HiRO-ACEv2, an update to its climate emulator that combines a 100 km ACE model with a 3 km HiROv2 downscaling model for rain, wind, and pressure. The system matches X-SHiELD high-resolution statistics within 3% on coarsened inputs, including very rare events, and can produce global 3 km data at roughly 1/300th the cost of X-SHiELD. Models, tutorial notebooks, and a demo with pre-generated outputs are available, but the system is still limited to the X-SHiELD-matched ACE setup.
INSIGHTS
For teams deciding whether to generate many high-resolution weather scenarios, the reported cost reduction makes HiRO-ACEv2 practical for global or regional runs that would be expensive with X-SHiELD. The trade-off is scope: because HiRO learned from X-SHiELD, it cannot yet generate high-resolution data for other climates such as ERA5 historical data or a 4°C warmer world, and hurricane eye winds and pressure remain less symmetric than X-SHiELD.
