Northrop’s robot space mechanic is a new way to keep satellites at work longer

Northrop Grumman’s Mission Extension Vehicle has detached from an Optus communications satellite after more than a year of helping it stay in position. A new Mission Robotic Vehicle with DARPA-developed arms is scheduled in 2027 to attach a Mission Extension Pod that could add roughly six years of service.

Satellite servicing is moving from one-off demonstrations toward a repeatable infrastructure business as lower launch costs make repairs and upgrades more practical. If successful, Northrop’s approach could extend revenue from aging satellites and accelerate a broader shift toward sustainable space operations.
