Anthropic is turning Claude Code’s auto mode on by default

Anthropic says Claude Code will default to auto mode for Pro, Max, and Team accounts, reducing approval prompts for routine coding actions. The company says the mode proceeds unless an action appears irreversible, destructive, or outside the user’s environment, and claims testing showed it caught more harmful actions than manual review.

The change reflects a broader shift toward more autonomous AI coding agents, where vendors are trying to reduce friction without giving up safety controls. Anthropic’s data also highlights a key usability risk: frequent permission prompts can train users to approve nearly everything, making automation with guardrails potentially safer than constant human review.
