Waymo reportedly mulling a breakup with Uber

Waymo is reportedly exploring an exit from its Uber partnership, which currently lets users book Waymo robotaxis through Uber in Austin and Atlanta. Uber says Waymo plans to launch service through its own app in those markets in January 2028, while their current contract runs until May 2028.

A split would signal Waymo’s growing confidence in owning the customer relationship rather than relying on ride-hailing platforms for distribution. The tensions also highlight how robotaxi regulation and safety perceptions are becoming competitive battlegrounds as autonomous ride services scale.
