Feds demand autonomous vehicle companies stop interfering with first responders

NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison told autonomous vehicle developers that driverless cars interfering with emergency responders is unacceptable and must be addressed by month’s end. The agency cited AVs entering active scenes, blocking ambulances and firefighters, and failing to respond to flashing lights, flares, smoke, fire, and traffic cones.

The directive signals tougher federal scrutiny of robotaxi operations as deployments expand in dense urban markets. Treating emergency response failures as a functional insufficiency rather than an edge case could force AV companies to prioritize responder coordination, remote assistance, and scene-detection systems before broader scaling.
