Founders Fund’s outlier bet on humanely killed fish

Shinkei Systems makes Poseidon, a boat-installed robot that uses computer vision to identify fish and perform an automated version of ike jime, killing them instantly and draining blood. Founder Saif Khawaja says the approach reduces fish suffering while improving flavor, shelf life, and the ability to age premium seafood.

The investment shows venture capital interest expanding into unusual intersections of automation, animal welfare, and food quality. If Shinkei can scale, it could push fisheries toward higher-margin seafood while making humane slaughter a commercial differentiator rather than just an ethical claim.
