EDITOR BRIEF

Valve’s Timur Kristóf has spent the past year improving support for old AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 GPUs and APUs in the Linux AMDGPU kernel driver. His work helps move these cards off the legacy Radeon driver, enabling RADV Vulkan, better performance, improved display behavior, power management fixes, and soft reset support.

COMMENTARY

The work shows how targeted open-source driver investment can extend the life of aging hardware well beyond vendor priorities. For Linux gaming, Valve’s continued focus on hardware compatibility strengthens the broader ecosystem by making even older PCs more viable for modern workloads.
