Qualcomm’s new ‘Elite’ sound chip might finally deliver the Wi-Fi earbud dream

Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2, its first audio chip with integrated micro-power Wi-Fi 6E for earbuds and audio glasses. The chip is designed to let devices stream higher-quality audio directly over home Wi-Fi and the cloud, reducing dependence on a nearby phone and Bluetooth range.

If widely adopted, the chip could make Wi-Fi earbuds more practical for lossless streaming, longer-range listening, and always-connected audio devices. The move reflects a broader push to make wearables less tethered to smartphones, though battery life, product support, and real-world reliability will determine whether the promise finally lands.
