F-Droid 2.0 rolls out with redesigned Android app, improved discovery, and rebuilt Kotlin Compose foundation

F-Droid announced version 2.0, its largest app update in a decade, after more than a year of development and 14 test releases. The redesign adds a modern Material Design-inspired interface, simpler navigation across Discover, Search, and My Apps, plus improved browsing and search for FOSS Android apps.

The update reflects how alternative app stores are modernizing user experience to compete with mainstream distribution channels while preserving privacy-first principles. Rebuilding core components in Kotlin Compose should also help F-Droid ship improvements faster and maintain relevance as Android design and tooling evolve.
