The AI data center e-waste problem is huge — and getting bigger

A new Basel Action Network report says e-waste from the AI boom has been sharply underestimated because prior studies focused too narrowly on servers. Including broader data center infrastructure, the group estimates AI-related waste could reach 23 million shipping containers by 2050.

The findings highlight how AI’s environmental footprint extends beyond energy use and carbon emissions into hardware churn, cooling systems, and supporting infrastructure. As AI buildouts accelerate, pressure may grow for circular hardware practices, longer equipment lifecycles, and stricter e-waste regulation.
