WebGPU proof-of-concept can freeze macOS desktops across major browsers after a user clicks a malicious link

A researcher describes “Deathray,” a small WebGPU demo that can hang a Mac’s graphics stack and make the desktop unusable until a forced restart. The issue reproduces on macOS across Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, while other operating systems appear to suffer only tab freezes or slowdowns.

The finding highlights how newer browser APIs that expose GPU capabilities can create system-level denial-of-service risks beyond ordinary web sandbox failures. Cross-browser impact suggests the weak point may sit in macOS graphics handling or GPU driver behavior rather than any single browser implementation.
