Sony isn’t phasing out discs quite as quickly as we thought

Sony’s discmaking division clarified that its Thalgau plant is expected to produce 10% fewer discs in 2028, correcting reports that suggested a 90% cut. The company still appears committed to ending video game disc production in January 2028, but the broader disc business is winding down more gradually than previously believed.

The correction suggests physical media’s decline remains real but uneven, with Sony managing a slower transition rather than an abrupt shutdown.
