Broadcom removes public VMware VDDK downloads, potentially complicating migrations from vSphere to rival virtualization platforms

Broadcom has removed the previously public download pages for VMware’s Virtual Disk Development Kit, and some customers report being told it is no longer generally available. The VDDK is used by migration and backup tools including Azure Migrate, Red Hat’s Migration Toolkit, Nutanix Move, virt-v2v, and nbdkit, making the change significant for organizations planning to leave vSphere.

If permanent, the move could create a new form of platform lock-in by disrupting tools that rely on VMware disk access libraries. It also reinforces enterprise concerns that Broadcom’s VMware strategy is making exits harder, potentially accelerating demand for migration paths that do not depend on vendor-controlled components.
