Sony Music and Warner Chappell are suing Anthropic

Sony Music and Warner Chappell filed a copyright lawsuit against Anthropic in federal court in California, seeking damages tied to “tens of thousands” of works. The companies are asking for up to $150,000 per work and additional penalties for allegedly stripped copyright data, potentially totaling several billion dollars.

The case adds to mounting legal pressure on AI companies over the use of copyrighted material in model training and outputs. If courts award major damages, it could accelerate licensing deals and raise the cost of building generative AI systems.
