AWS acquires DuckLabs, bringing DuckDB’s Amsterdam team in-house while keeping Duck Stack projects open source

DuckLabs says it will join AWS in early September, with its Amsterdam-based team continuing work on DuckDB, DuckLake, Quack, and related projects. The company says DuckDB and other Duck Stack components will remain free and open source under the MIT license, with stewardship continuing through the nonprofit DuckDB Foundation.

The deal gives AWS deeper access to one of the fastest-growing analytical database projects while reducing concerns about abrupt licensing changes. It also reflects a broader trend of cloud providers acquiring influential open-source infrastructure teams to strengthen developer ecosystems and data platforms.
