Block’s new Apache 2.0 agent workspace Berd works across models and harnesses, stores conversation history locally

Block has released Berd, a locally installed desktop app that gives users one workspace for AI agents across models, providers, files, repositories, and projects. The Apache 2.0 project is available on GitHub with builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is designed to make active context and session state more visible than a typical chatbot interface.

Berd reflects a shift toward agent workspaces that sit closer to developers’ local files, tools, and repositories instead of living only in the browser. By open-sourcing it under a permissive license, Block could encourage broader experimentation with portable, model-agnostic AI workflows while reducing lock-in to any single provider.
