ChatGPT and Gemini both just passed 1 billion users

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Gemini now has 1 billion monthly users, making it Google’s 14th product to reach that scale and its fastest-growing product ever. OpenAI recently disclosed that ChatGPT had also passed 1 billion users, though outside estimates suggested it may have crossed that threshold earlier.

The back-to-back milestones show consumer AI has moved from novelty to mass-market utility at unprecedented speed. The next phase will likely focus less on raw user counts and more on retention, monetization, and how deeply AI assistants become embedded across everyday workflows.
