Jony Ive’s first OpenAI gadget is reportedly a hockey puck-sized smart speaker

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that OpenAI’s first device with Jony Ive is a battery-powered, doughnut-shaped smart speaker without a display, roughly the size of a hockey puck. Expected in 2027 at over $300, it may include moving parts, lights, cameras, and sensors to signal interaction and support in-home portability.

The design points to a push beyond phones and screens toward ambient AI hardware that can follow users around the home. If OpenAI can make the interaction model feel natural, the device could test whether consumers want a dedicated AI companion rather than just another app or voice assistant.
