The union drive at the Wikimedia Foundation is expanding

US-based staff at the Wikimedia Foundation are joining a union drive that began in June with UK employees. The workers, affiliated with the Communications Workers of America as Wiki Workers United, say management has not stayed neutral and has declined to voluntarily recognize the union.

The campaign shows labor organizing spreading further into mission-driven tech and nonprofit institutions, not just traditional corporations. Management’s refusal to recognize the union could turn the effort into a longer labor relations fight, testing how public-interest organizations align internal workplace practices with their stated values.
