ACRouter picks the smartest AI model per task, beating Opus-only setups by 2.6x on cost

Researchers introduced Agent-as-a-Router, an open-source framework that turns model routing into a dynamic agent using a Context-Action-Feedback loop. Its implementation, ACRouter, outperformed static routing methods and premium-model-only setups, reportedly delivering up to 2.6x better cost efficiency without large training runs or extensive manual rules.

The work reflects a broader shift toward adaptive AI infrastructure, where enterprises optimize model choice continuously rather than relying on fixed policies. If proven in production, agentic routers could reduce dependence on expensive frontier models while making multi-model AI stacks more resilient as user behavior and model capabilities change.
