Tencent's Apache-licensed Hy3 takes on GLM-5.2 at half the size — and wins everywhere except coding

Tencent’s Hunyuan team released the full Hy3 model, a 295B-parameter Mixture-of-Experts system with 21B active parameters, under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. The move removes regional licensing barriers that had limited enterprise adoption of many Chinese open-weight models, while Tencent claims Hy3 is competitive with GLM-5.2 except in coding tasks.

The license shift may matter as much as the benchmark results because it makes Hy3 easier for global enterprises to deploy without complex legal exclusions. Tencent is positioning the model around production readiness, signaling a broader trend where open-weight AI competition is moving beyond raw scores toward reliability, economics, and deployability.
