Z.ai launches ZCode to challenge Cursor, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot in AI coding

Beijing-based Z.ai, formerly Zhipu AI, launched ZCode, a free desktop agentic development app built around its GLM-5.2 model. The tool runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, supports bring-your-own-key access to third-party models, and is designed to handle multi-step coding tasks across files and workflows.

ZCode reflects how AI coding tools are shifting from autocomplete assistants toward agent-first IDEs that plan, edit, test, and iterate with less human micromanagement. It also highlights intensifying competition in a market shaped by falling model costs, enterprise adoption, and growing separation between Chinese and Western AI ecosystems.
