EDITOR BRIEF

QSOE 0.1 is the first public release of a QNX-inspired operating system that ships in two variants: QSOE/N on the new Skimmer microkernel and QSOE/L on seL4. Both variants share the same userspace and build system, target 64-bit RISC-V hardware, and now boot on the SiFive HiFive Unmatched as well as QEMU.

INSIGHTS

QSOE highlights renewed interest in microkernel designs that separate policy and services from the kernel while preserving portability across kernel implementations. Its dual-kernel approach could make it a useful research and embedded-systems platform, especially as RISC-V ecosystems mature.
