China’s Z.ai claims it can match Mythos on cybersecurity

Zhipu AI released GLM-5.2, an open-weight model that researchers say can match Anthropic’s Mythos in some cybersecurity and bug-finding scenarios. The model still trails top U.S. systems on broader tasks, but suggests China is narrowing the AI capability gap.

The release challenges U.S. efforts to limit China’s access to advanced models and the hardware needed to train them. Strong open-weight performance in security tasks could accelerate AI diffusion, making frontier-like capabilities harder to contain through export controls alone.
