Iroh 1.0 launches stable networking stack for addressing devices by cryptographic keys instead of IP addresses

Iroh announced its first stable release after four years of open development, promoting a model where devices are reached through persistent cryptographic keys rather than fragile IP addresses. The project includes QUIC multipath support, NAT traversal, local-first discovery, browser/WASM compatibility, hooks, and custom transports, with its public relays seeing over 200 million endpoints in the past 30 days.

Iroh reflects a broader shift toward peer-to-peer and local-first networking that abstracts away unreliable network locations and makes devices securely reachable across changing conditions. If adopted widely, this approach could simplify apps for messaging, file sharing, gaming, AI agents, and edge workloads while reducing dependence on centralized routing infrastructure.
