Tests find EU-banned pesticide residues in imported rice, tea and spices sold across four European countries
EDITOR BRIEF
Foodwatch lab tests on 64 products from the Netherlands, France, Austria and Germany found pesticide residues in 49 items, including 45 with chemicals not approved in the EU. Fourteen samples exceeded legal residue limits, with paprika, chili and cumin products among the most contaminated.
CONTEXT
The findings highlight a regulatory loophole in which pesticides banned in the EU can still be exported, used abroad, and return through imported foods. The report may intensify pressure on lawmakers to tighten import controls and resist proposed food safety rollbacks in Brussels.
