Writer turns an old Linux laptop into a distraction-free Debian “writerdeck” for focused drafting

The author repurposed a six-year-old System76 Galago Pro into a dedicated writing machine with a matte screen, strong keyboard, and no modern desktop distractions. Instead of using a standard GUI, they installed Debian in a console-only setup to create a tty-based environment focused solely on writing.

The project reflects a growing backlash against always-connected productivity tools and a renewed interest in single-purpose devices. Repurposing older hardware for focused work also shows how Linux can extend device lifespans while giving users more control over their digital environments.
