F.A.T. Lab releases a free 3D-printable adapter kit for connecting Lego, Tinkertoys, K’Nex, and other construction toys

F.A.T. Lab and Sy-Lab introduced the Free Universal Construction Kit, a set of nearly 80 adapters that make ten popular construction toy systems interoperable. The project is released freely, letting users download and fabricate parts that connect otherwise incompatible toy ecosystems.

The project frames toy compatibility as a form of grassroots interoperability, using digital fabrication to route around closed product systems. It also foreshadows broader maker-culture debates over proprietary formats, repairability, and user control of physical platforms.
